Job Description - Kids Leader for Forest Gate Church



Forest Gate Church is a lively and caring church made up of about 100 people. We meet every Sunday in a local comprehensive school, Dene Magna, this gives us adequate space to continue to invite visitors to join us and; to be able to use the facilities such as gym, classrooms, outdoor spaces, etc for the kids and youth ministries. We have a chapel building, called the Youth and community building (Y&C) in the village of Mitcheldean, where we have many community activities in the week from parent & toddlers groups, to senior citizens lunches, knitting classes, youth club, youth activities and parenting and CAP (Christians Against Poverty) money courses. At the Y&C building we also have the church office.

The role will include overseeing the Sunday program for the children that attend kid’s Church. This is currently a wide age-range from 2-11 years, with currently a possible maximum of 15 children. We would want the post holder to work towards increasing the contact with the community families to encourage the children to attend on a Sunday and where possible their families.

To oversee the group Little Sprouts that is currently open twice weekly in term-time at the Y&C in the mornings. This is for parent/carer’s and their pre-school children. In these sessions we have a coffee bar that is operated from the kitchen and then a main room with toys and equipment for the children to enjoy and play with, bistro tables, chairs and settees for families to relax and sit down in a welcoming environment.

For both of these groups to ensure that the volunteers have up to date training for safeguarding and have had DBS checks and have any other necessary training needed.

Every Easter, Summer and Christmas school holidays, Forest Gate hosts a kids workshop for the primary aged children of the community and this is currently led by a volunteer who is the Family Support worker for the primary school. However, your role would be to assist her in helping to prepare and organise these events and should the need arise to lead the relevant workshops.



Kids Church

  • Organise the teaching and volunteers duty rota.

  • To lead the team of helpers, exercising good communication and management skills.

  • To be able to give a level of pastoral care to the team and build a good working relationship with them.

  • Put together appropriate planning for the ages in kids church and to use exciting and relevant Christian teaching that is based on solid biblical sources.

  • In the future when there is a need to split the kid’s church to primary age and a crèche, to help and support set this up. However, you would not be expected to run this.

Little Sprouts

  • Manage and lead the two teams that work at Little Sprouts twice a week, including the coffee bar staff.

  • To exercise good diplomacy skills between the volunteers that work with the families and the staff that operate the coffee bar.

  • To work towards building a good relationship with the local families that attend.

  • To oversee the administration of rotas, letters, registration forms, finance, upkeep of equipment, cleaning of toys, checking that there are ample resources available for activities, and to delegate these where appropriate.

  • To exercise health and safety rules of the building when Little Sprouts is in session.

Kids Workshop

  • Help with the organisation and assist the kid’s workshop leader as necessary.

  • To be part of the team on the workshop days.

  • If the need arises to lead the workshop. To support children transition from kids programs to youth programs by communicating well with the youth leader at Forest Gate.



  • To live out a Christian life and agree to Forest Gate’s statement of faith.

  • To strive to maintain your own spiritual life, so you can serve from a close relationship with God.

  • To be part of the life of Forest Gate Church, involving with home groups, corporate prayer times, church services, events, as much as you are able.

  • To have some experience of leading others/management.

  • To communicate and work with the senior leadership of the church.

  • To have a passion for kids workand to see the children experience Jesus.

  • To help children grow in their faith, with relevant discipleship programs.

  • Display good communications skills.

  • To encourage and look after volunteer staff.

  • To work within the policies & procedures of Forest Gate Church and follow the Churches Protection Board Safeguarding Training.



  • To live within a short distance to Mitcheldean.

  • To have had previous experience of a similar role before.

  • To have at least a level 3 in qualification of working with children.



  • This position is for 16 hours paid work a week, with looking at the potential of increasing as the role expands.

  • Five weeks paid holiday a year.

  • Pay is calculated on the basis of 10 pounds an hour before tax, pension and national insurance is deducted.

  • On a Sunday all paid staff work as volunteers alongside the rest of the church.

  • As a church we would like to see in the future the expansion of the kids program to introduce a mid-week group, either after school or an evening, for the primary years.

  • Another expansion of this role would be to actively get involved with the local primary school through helping with assemblies, open the book, etc.

  • Forest Gate Church will provide all necessary training for this role, which includes safeguarding, update on policies & procedures, first aid and food safety training.

  • Forest Gate is committed to sending kids workers to relevant training for the leader and their staff.
